So you think you want to edit?
The session is for anyone who's getting started as an editor or is interested in trying. Writers often ask editors how we became editors, and express frustration at a common catch-22: how to get into editing with little editing experience. Meanwhile, junior editors wonder how to build their skills, since many never receive formal training. In this session, experienced editors with a range of backgrounds will talk about career paths and the skills writers need in order to make the leap into editing. And most importantly, we'll give you tips for how to get those skills. After opening remarks, we'll break into smaller groups, each led by an editor, where you can ask your own questions and discuss common challenges such as how to get your first opportunity as an editor, how to build skills, and how to get feedback on your editing. We'll also give tips for new and aspiring editors such as how to find great stories to assign for your publication, balancing writing and editing, and how to give writers constructive feedback.
