Tour of the Harlan Greenhouse at the GW Department of Biological Sciences
Join us for a visit of the Harlan Greenhouse, situated on the eighth floor of the Science and Engineering Hall building, our modern facility dedicated to the study of plant diversity, climate change, and plant-insect interactions. During your tour of the greenhouse, you will have the opportunity to see plant collections from tropical to temperate locations used for research and teaching. You will also be able to discuss these projects with the faculty carrying out the research. Projects range from mapping the progression of evolutionary events as plants left the water to live on land, to examining the fungi that break down plant material and recycle it back to the atmosphere, to investigating the response of Chesapeake Bay tidal wetland plants to sea level rise, and the insect communities of the once abundant and now functionally extinct American chestnut tree. You will also see GW engineering students' innovative systems for hydroponic agri/aquaculture and to mimic tidal flooding.
