Congratulations, you're a manager! Now what?

Congratulations, you're a manager! Now what?

Managers have a tremendous amount of responsibility but often little formal or informal training. This session will feature managers from a variety of organizations who will share what they've learned and offer practical advice to people who are new to management, who want to improve their management skills, or who hope to become a manager later in their careers. We'll talk about strategies that work well and things we tried that failed, how managing is different from editing, what skills people should develop if they're interested in management, and what training resources we have found to be useful. Some of the specific subjects we expect to cover include: Performance reviews, negotiating offers and raises, monitoring and improving morale, helping people during times of personal crisis, transparency, "managing up" to advocate for your team, and the importance of bringing snacks to meetings.
