CPS Energy is the nation’s largest municipally owned energy utility providing both natural gas and electric service. It serves more than 765,000 electric customers and 335,000 natural gas customers in and around San Antonio, the nation’s seventh largest city. This tour will take you to Alamo 3, a 70-acre solar farm built almost entirely from locally built components. Alamo 3 uses new, dual-axis tracker technology from locally based Sun Action Trackers and inverters by San Antonio’s KACO new energy. Dual-axis trackers use sensors to help panels follow the sun’s arc both up and down and side to side, allowing them to generate more energy than fixed panels, or those that just only move in one direction. The growth of CPS’ solar-generated electricity is helping push CPS toward its goal of having 20 percent of its generation capacity come from renewable energy sources by 2020.
