Minority journalists of color from the Black, Hispanic/Latino, and American Indian communities are severely underrepresented in the science communication profession. The non-profit DiverseScholar, using NASW Idea grant funds, created a diversity travel fellowship to address this problem. We also created Science Journalism 101 and Science Pitch Slam sessions at minority journalism conferences. We will also discuss the role of broadcast versus writing channels to reach minority communities, the creation of culturally-sensitive health press services to support underfunded minority publications, and outreaching to communities of non-English dominant science reporters such as the Mexican Network of Science Journalists.
