As journalists, it is critical that we remain objective — but as thinking people, we naturally have opinions. What’s the relationship between opinion and bias? Should we disclose our opinions to our readers and editors or keep them private? Are different approaches appropriate in different contexts — a news piece, an opinion piece, a blog post, a tweet, a speech, a casual conversation — and if you express an opinion in one context, how does that affect what you can appropriately say in another? When we have opinions, we naturally believe that we’re right — but how do we remain open to conflicting information, and how do we judge whether we are doing so effectively?
