Getting Real: Science Writing in AR and VR
Virtual reality is erupting from the startup world into the wider world, from gaming to movies and mainstream journalism. Science journalists are starting to take advantage of the unique opportunities of virtual reality (VR), so it is time to gather some pioneers to learn from early examples of VR and discuss how best the rest of us might integrate it into our work. A piece of cardboard can turn a mobile device into an ersatz headset, and early work has shown that affordable cameras and software can produce successful immersive experiences. Prices and complexity should drop, so science journalists around the world should add immersive formats from VR to 360-degree video to augmented reality to their arsenal of media.
