Online Audio

Producing great audio for the Internet requires coupling a little technical know-how to several other skills science writers already have. Each skill is familiar -- interviewing, storytelling, churning out rough drafts, polishing your prose, and editing -- but the audio-version is a little different. This three-hour workshop is for those who want to acquire and sharpen the audio-versions of their science-writing skills for an array of audio projects, from podcasts to oral histories, audio slideshows to multimedia platforms.

You’ll learn:
* interviewing and field-micing techniques
* how to make interviewees comfortable with being recorded
* soup-to-nuts basic audio recording/editing/production steps (hands on)
* listening techniques and how to give useful feedback to others

Required:
Your own laptop and headphones. $30; pre-registration.

Optional:
recorder, microphone, and audio files of any project you’re currently working on

Data Crunching and Visualization Hands-on Workshop

Kevin Z. Smith
  Deputy director, Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism

Update: Macs or PCs are ok to bring, but you must bring your own laptop. Don't forget to update your system software and install Google Fusion Tables before arrival.

This introductory session on data crunching and visualization is a must for any reporter who wants to take that huge mound of data and quickly and easily analyze it to produce charts and tables. You can break down data into understandable fields, link your data to maps for color-coded display, and share your work with others. This is a hands-on session and we will walk you though the entire process from data collecting to creating the visuals. You don’t need to be a spreadsheet wizard or data analyst to attend.

Note: All those attending must have a laptop (Mac or PC) with updated software and the latest version of Google Fusion Tables onto their laptops prior to the session.

Required:
Your own Mac or PC laptop with Google Fusion Tables installed. $30; pre-registration.

Presented by the Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism at Ohio State University.
