In the balance: Cobbling together a freelance career

From the outside, a freelancer's life might look glamorous: flexible schedules, being choosy with assignments, and traveling at the drop of a hat. Freelance writers might make it look easy, though it's anything but. Flexibility can also mean precariousness; freelancers must learn to manage their time and finances, often balancing different kinds of work as well as other responsibilities, jobs and families. In this session, four freelancers with different perspectives and backgrounds share their experiences and insights about balancing writing with other tasks, like editing, fact checking, parenting, and public information officer work.

This session will include tips current freelancers can bring back to their desks about ways to broaden their portfolio, develop networks and bring in new clients. It will also give writers considering jumping into freelancing a realistic look at what it's like to build a freelance career. Following brief statements from the speakers, there will be plenty of time for questions, discussions, and advice on the many challenging issues freelancers face every day.
