Active Marcellus Shale drilling pad field trip

It is estimated that there is a 20-year supply of gas for the United States in Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale — a potentially recoverable 489 trillion cubic feet with current technology. Future technology may increase the amount recoverable. It will take decades to drill the wells to extract this resource. Penn State’s Marcellus Center for Outreach and Research is offering an opportunity to learn firsthand about the technical operations of natural gas production as well as the economic, environmental and community impacts of Marcellus Shale development during a day-long field trip to Lycoming County.

Participants will tour an area in the Tiadagton State Forest to see drilling pads, pipelines, and water storage infrastructure with explanation of drilling basics and operations. Discussions will focus on economic, landscape, infrastructure, environmental and social impacts related to Marcellus Shale development. Please wear closed-toe shoes that are appropriate for being outside and dress appropriately for the weather.
