Thomas Hayden directs the environmental communication master of arts program at Stanford University, in California. He has been an oceanographer, a staffer at Newsweek and a senior editor at U.S. News & World Report, and a freelance science journalist whose cover stories have appeared in Wired, National Geographic, Smithsonian, and many other publications. He is coauthor of On Call in Hell, a national bestseller about battlefield medicine, and Sex and War, about the biological and social evolution of warfare.
