Several types of travel fellowships are available. If eligible, applicants may apply for more than one fellowship, but will be awarded a maximum of only one. Each fellowship requires a separate and distinct application using the guidelines below.

Successful applicants will be notified by September 17 unless otherwise noted.

CASW Travel Fellowship

Eligibility: The fellowships are intended primarily for journalists from smaller metropolitan print and broadcast news outlets, select freelancers and webcasters with a demonstrated interest in science writing.

Description: The fellowships offer up to $1,200 to cover the costs of attending ScienceWriters2014, and in particular the New Horizons in Science briefings organized by CASW on Sunday and Monday. CASW traveling fellows can choose to assist with mentoring and editing of student writers participating in the New Horizons Student Newsroom or to provide a written report or social-media curation on the New Horizons program.

Submit 1) a brief (no more than 500-word) expression of interest; 2) a resume; 3) no more than 3 clips or broadcast transcripts on any topic; and 4) a nominating letter from a senior editor, news director or producer. DiverseScholar NASW Diversity Travel Fellowship

Eligibility: Open to underrepresented minorities in the journalism profession especially members of the African-, Hispanic-, and Native-American communities.

NASW Freelance Travel Fellowship

Eligibility: Open to freelance science writers

Description: Provides up to $1000 to cover the costs of attending the ScienceWriters meeting . These fellowships are supported by the Authors Coalition of America funds. Note: Before receiving reimbursement, fellows must submit a short report of one or more aspects of the workshops, suitable for publication on the NASW Web site and potentially in ScienceWriters. Assignments will be made prior to the meeting and must be filed within 48 hours after the assigned session. More information will be available after grants are awarded.

NASW Graduate Travel Fellowship

Eligibility: Open to current students enrolled in a science writing program.

Description: Provides up to $1000 to cover the costs of attending the ScienceWriters meeting. These fellowships are supported by the Authors Coalition of America funds. Note: Before receiving reimbursement, fellows must submit a short report of one or more aspects of the workshops, suitable for publication on the NASW Web site and potentially in ScienceWriters. Assignments, which may include live tweeting or other coverage of a session, will be made prior to the meeting and must be filed within 48 hours after the assigned session. NASW PIO Travel Fellowship

Eligibility: The National Association of Science Writers is initiating travel grants for the annual Science Writers conference that will be available to public information officers unable to secure full travel support from their institutions. The fellowships are intended for public information officers from universities, hospitals and other non-profit organizations who primarily are responsible for science writing. Preference will be given to first time attendees, but others will be considered as well.

Description: Provides up to $1000 to cover the costs of attending ScienceWriters2014. These fellowships are supported by the Authors Coalition of America funds. Note: Before receiving reimbursement, fellows must submit a short report of one or more aspects of the workshops, suitable for publication on the NASW Web site and potentially in ScienceWriters. Assignments will be made prior to the meeting and must be filed within 48 hours after the assigned session. More information will be available after grants are awarded.

NASW Changing Times Travel Fellowship

Eligibility: Open to science writers who have experienced a change in circumstances (e.g. travel budgets slashed or loss of employment) since January 1, 2014

Description: Provides up to $1000 to cover the costs of attending ScienceWriters2014. These fellowships are supported by the Authors Coalition of America funds. Note: Before receiving reimbursement, fellows must submit a short report of one or more aspects of the workshops, suitable for publication on the NASW Web site and potentially in ScienceWriters. Assignments will be made prior to the meeting and must be filed within 48 hours after the assigned session. More information will be available after grants are awarded.

The statement should briefly note how your circumstances have changed and focus on how attending the meeting would benefit your science writing career.
