In November, 2009, hackers released emails from climate researchers at the University of East Anglia in England, prompting wide-ranging attacks on climate research and climate researchers—Mann among them. The author of the famous “hockey-stick” graph of temperatures over the past millennium, Mann was not amused; indeed, for a time his career as one of the world’s leading climate scientists seemed in jeopardy. In July, a university investigation completely vindicated him of charges of data fabrication. Mann said he was grateful, and eager to return to his research on such things as projecting regional climate-change impacts, hurricanes and climate change, ancient climate reconstructions, and climate modeling. He will give us an update on his latest research, and an insider’s view on what it means to be falsely accused of scientific misconduct.
